Find the value of

for which the quadratic equation

(m - 1) x^{2} + 2 (m - 1) x + 1 = 0

has two real and equal roots.

Solution

For real and equal roots,

D = 0

:

4 (m - 1)^{2} - 4 (m - 1) = 0

+0.5 marks

\Rightarrow 4 (m - 1) (m - 2) = 0

+1 mark

or

m = 2
