Question
The ratio of the 11th term to the 18th term of an A.P. is 2:3. Find the ratio of the 5th term to the 21st term, and also the ratio of the sum of first 5 terms to the sum of first 21 terms.
Solution
1
a+17da+10d=32. Cross-multiplying: 3a+30d=2a+34d⇒a=4d.
+1 mark2
a21a5=a+20da+4d=4d+20d4d+4d=24d8d=31.
+1.5 marks3
S21S5=221[2a+20d]25[2a+4d]=21[8d+20d]5[8d+4d].
+1.5 marks4
=21×28d5×12d=58860=495. So S5:S21=5:49.
